GROWING GOOD ROOTS

Growing Good Roots is a farm + nature-based experiential education non-profit in partnership with Good Roots Farm and Gardens.

Our mission is to cultivate “learners of all ages” with various age-appropriate programs that connect learners to the earth, to themselves, and their community. We offer programs that are hands-on that include team-building activities, nature hikes, garden and animal experiences, art and craft projects, family activities, intentional play, and more.

We believe that the well-being of children and ultimately adults are linked to being in nature. While research tells us that we need regular time in nature, our western, modern world has lost that connection for the past few generations.

Kids need to connect with the dirt, the plants, the animals, and their bodies within these environs.  It is a natural way of learning and builds deep confidence in the individual experiencing something through all the senses.  I ran an afterschool program where the most joy I saw in the youth was when I was able to take them into nature and let them explore.  I feel that it is an extremely neglected area of childhood development”.

-Shay Sorlie, a local educator

We provide a place for learners to grow holistically as we integrate science with the humanities through experiential education.

Our values are summarized through the three ethics of Permaculture:

·        Earth Care: teaching the importance to nurture and protect land and how we are connected to it.

·        People Care: teaching personal growth and skill development as we understand we are a part of a larger community, (communication, leadership, social relationships), as well as the importance of healthy food

·        Fair Share: Food justice (who grows the food and who gets the food, and who makes the profit), food security (what, where and to whom is food accessible to) dialoguing about climate change and its causes and consequences.

More details to come soon for summer 2022.
